“Overlord” was the official name for the Allied landing on the Normandy coast in June 1944, also known as “D-Day”.

As early as April 9, 1940, more than 6,000 Danish sailors outside Denmark had to decide whether to be sent home or to serve on Allied ships. The sailors who chose to fight became the first Danes to actively join the war against Nazi Germany.

This documentary features a number of Danish sailors who ferried soldiers and ammunitions during the landing on the French coast on D-Day. Thanks to their choice, Denmark is now officially recognized as an allied nation for the purpose of celebrating the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

BBC Studios Nordic’s producer, Carl Otto Dethlefsen says that the interest in the documentary has been great, and he welcomes the great reviews from Politiken (among other medias).

The documentary premiered on DR-K on the 70th anniversary of D-Day (June 6th) at 9:00PM (21:00).
